Jurassic Park was prophetic.

We were so focused on whether or not we could make booze from durian fruit, we never stopped to think whether or not we should make booze from durian fruit.

Rex and Brianna finally finished their much-demanded distillation experiment for this weekend’s Tribe episode.

The smell… It clings.

At $17 a pound, curiosity got the better of me, and I was peer pressured into a cautious nibble of ripe durian. Technically, it was edible. Practically, it did not go gentle into that good night.

As for the resulting spirit, it was a fun and ridiculous detour from our well worn whiskey path. But I don’t think whiskey makers should worry about durian flavored booze stealing the limelight anytime soon.

Check out the episode when it releases, and leave a YouTube comment if you have another worthy distillation experiment.

Hopefully the next palate cleanser will be more - palatable. Although, there’s something oddly compelling about a bit of mother nature’s bounty being violently stinky.
