If you’ve been paying attention at all, your own whiskey journey is emphasizing quality over quantity. But when your glass is no stranger to great whiskey, it’s easy to let enthusiasm get out of control. So how do you know if whiskey is getting the better of you? Keep in mind, I’m just a guy who allegedly gets misty eyed at Spiderman movies. Again, NOT crying. Misty eyed. There’s a difference… Shut up.
I caught that movie with m’lady last week, and it was dolphin smooth sailing from there. Thanks for being cool about it.
We saw the new Spiderman movie. I won’t spoil anything, but it was better than expected. Tom Holland aka Peter Parker got me pretty good in one scene. I may or may not have leaned further back into my seat so the wife couldn’t see me get misty eyed.
If you tell that to anyone, I’ll deny it. Lies and slander. How dare you. I’m not crying - you’re crying…
We know movies like that follow a tried and true formula, so there’s not much new cinematic ground being broken. But c’mon, it’s Spiderman.
Young. Earnest. Tragic. In over his head. Idealistic to a fault.
Everyone knows the line, “With great power comes great responsibility.”
It’s been remixed and repurposed a bunch of different ways over time. I saw one of the most relevant versions on a website for whiskey tours a couple years ago.
“With great whiskey comes great responsibility.”
Wish I'd thought of it. Gonna use it anyway.
That line sums up a good way to think about whiskey. It can be powerful. Strong enough to forge new bonds with Magnificent people. But destructive enough to turn your life on it’s head.

Everyone should be able to draw their own line in the sand, but this is what works for me.
If whiskey (or any substance) ever causes you to regret:
something you did
something you said
something you spent resources on
you should take an intentional break and consider your priorities.
It’s easy to fetishize the extremes of anything. But most of us don’t live in a world of unbridled drunken debauchery, or optimization driven sobriety. If you’re anything like me, taking a moment to be honest with yourself will reveal the balance necessary for a life well lived.
