Joe accidentally discovered a mysterious hole on the property. Last week he dropped a small car part on the ground. No big deal. But the impact opened a circular hole in the earth that went deeper than his flashlight could see. The 5 inch diameter of the mystery hole wasn’t especially hazardous. But the fancy instrument we used revealed a depth exceeding 1,000 feet. (300+ meters)

Rex and the crew tied a small camera and light to some fishing line. The images it brought back were cool, but it journeyed just a fraction of the way down the hole before losing signal.
What does this have to do with whiskey? Well… we poured a bit of whiskey down there. A single malt. Our geologist friend said it was fine, and that the hole is most likely an abandoned well.
You’ve heard of “pouring one out” in memory of the dead? We just did it harder and deeper than everyone else.
Apparently, the act of pouring liquid on the ground as an act of reverence for loved ones that have passed away is a VERY ancient tradition? It’s where the word “libation” comes from. There’s a short article about the tradition at vinepair if you want a little knowledge chaser.
From the depths, I summon thee.
