It feels like Christmas in July.
Last January, the Crowded Barrel crew filled an old Laphroaig (Islay Scotch) barrel with a sourced, un-aged Island Scotch spirit. Why? To see how differently Scotch ages in Texas.
Even though it’s barely been 6 months, we’re about to pop the bunghole and sample the first results of the experiment. In Scotland, a whisky this young would have barely changed at all. But 6 months in Texas is often enough time to deliver a dark color and big, brash flavors.
Granted, the Laphroaig barrel is used - so the wood impact is likely to be a bit more tame than a new oak barrel. Then again, the Whiskey Tribe’s recent experiment with barrel aged vodka delivered an incredibly dark and rich spirit in 6 months.
I doubt it’ll be ready for prime-time, but I’m eager to poke and prod the thing a bit. Somehow this is my job, so I’ll put on my best serious-science face in the barrel house. But make no mistake, underneath that thin veneer of a respectable adult, lies a giddy child - spellbound by the magic of a brand new toy.
One day, we’ll raise a glass together and share such a moment. Until then, politicians have closed all bars and tasting rooms again. Fridays and Saturdays are still open for bottle pickups. I’ll keep you posted and let you know as soon as we can re-open the Crowded Barrel tasting room.
Happy 4th y’all.
